The festival of Diwali marks the end of the harvesting season in many parts of India wherein the farmers thank God for the bounty of the year gone by and also pray for a good harvest in the coming year. Goddess Lakshmi symbolizes wealth and prosperity and her blessings are especially invoked for an excellent year ahead. One of the most important and significant spiritual meanings behind the festival is “the awareness of the inner light”. According to the Hindu philosophy it is believed that there is a lot more beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite and eternal which is known as the Atman.

The festival is celebrated as the “victory of good over evil” which basically refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one’s true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite and transcendent reality. This brings to light and awakens the compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things that is the higher knowledge which further brings the joy of peace.
The festival has a different significance to people all across the country, India. On one hand North Indians celebrate it as the homecoming of Rama that is his return to Ayodhya, after the defeat of Ravana and on the other hand in Gujarat it is the festival that honors Lakshmi and in Bengal it is associated with the Goddess Kali.Happy Diwali 2013 to You & Your Family.
